Mocha finds himself in the middle of a vast, windy plain. The wind rushes around him, carrying his thick mane and tail with it's strength. Hearing is made nearly impossible with the way the wind is whining, but the vague smells of indiscriminate furry things are there to tickle his nose, while around his feet there are faint hoof prints left in the clay. Shall he follow his nose? Or follow the hoof prints?

Mocha came to a halt. The wind had steadily increased since this morning. At first he had reveled in the feeling of the gentle breeze on his body and in his mane, but now, it made it nearly impossible to go on.

He had been picking up a scent upwind, that he couldn't make sense of, and since it somewhat reminded him of carnivores, he decided to instead follow the faint hoof prints he had noticed when he had stopped a few minutes ago.

The windblown prints lead farther out into the plains where the grass moves like an ocean under the harsh gusts from above. Far into the distance, large lumbering shapes can be seen, but they don't look equine, what on earth could they be? Will you investigate the shapes? Or err on the side of caution and steer clear but continue onward?

Looking far ahead into the distance, Mocha could see large shapes, that didn't appear to be equine, but unless there existed a kind of large carnivore he never heard of, they probably were nothing to be afraid of. Since the wind didn't let off, and he didn't want to lose the footprints to the wind, he decided to move on, but keep a bit to the side of the large somethings.

As Mocha walked, one of the grey beasts turned around and let out a blast of noise in his direction. Trumpeting its distrust at the strange little brown creature in it's land. The elephant gave a short charge in Mocha's direction, holding it's ears out in a bluff, slightly behind it tottered a calf, staying close to it's mother. The elephant just wanted the strange brown beast to leave, fearful that it'd hurt her baby. Maybe if he got a little farther from the elephants, he'd be able to pass in peace. The hoof prints he'd been following were still as faint as ever, but there was a single tiny set of prints that seemed clearer than the rest now, would Mocha keep following those? Or steer farther away from the elephants?

Mocha had gotten fairly close to that herd of large animals, when suddenly he was startled by a loud, weird noise, seemingly made by one of those big creatures. He jumped, and turned, ready to break into a gallop away from them, when he noticed, that the one that had come towards him had stopped, and was followed by a smaller version of it.

'Oh', Mocha thought, 'these animals are nothing to be afraid of! This is just a mother protecting its offspring, and by the looks of them grazing on leaves of trees, they are herbivores just like myself'.

Keeping a save distance, as to not anger the mother once again, he kept following the hoof prints and suddenly a small set of prints becoming more clear than the others. Mocha was stunned. What could that mean? Had a youngster somehow been left behind? But why? He looked closer at the prints and thought he noticed a pattern in the way the hooves were placed. Maybe it was limping and wasn't able to keep up with the herd, thus his prints were clearer, since he was closer in distance to Mocha?

He decided he definitely must keep following the tracks, even if it was just to make sure, that there wasn't some little one out there, that needed his help. He broke into a gallop, partly to catch up to whatever it was he was following, and partly, because he wanted to pass the herd without any more instances.

(Elephants eh? ^_~)

The herd matriarch watches you go by warily, finally relaxing her guard as you gallop past the herd. Up ahead you can see a massive dust cloud, the dense kind caused by many herding animals. Where to now? Through the cloud? Or stray behind the herd, in case they react like the elephants?

[yesh, elephants are veeery friendly! Very Happy]

Finally slowing down, Mocha took time to survey his surroundings. Up ahead he saw a huge dust cloud. Something wasn't right. He could have sworn he had been following those small hoof prints all along. He hoped he hadn't missed the youngster running as fast as he had been.

He decided to keep going, following the dust cloud, at a slower pace. Maybe, when he got closer, or when they reached some grassland, what kind of animal the herd ahead of him was.

As Mocha neared the dust, a small shape could be seen through it. It clearly wasn't the cause of the dust cloud, but very much the reason for the hoofprints. A small oddly colored equine thing was barely visible teetering after the herd, and it called out after them in a squeaking voice not quite horse, not quite zebra. It was only a few hours old, it's hair still damp in places along it's oddly colored hide. What on earth could this weird little thing be?

While following the dust cloud, he kept wondering, what had made that herd move at such a fast pace, that it would create such an enormous cloud of dust?! Wrapped up in his thoughts, he almost didn't notice a small form materialize in the dust.

He heard its searching calls, and noticed its tired little feet kept stumbling over rocks and patches of grass. He immediately felt a surge of paternal instinct arise in him. He wasn't the youngest anymore, had lived through many seasons, and had helped raise and teach countless of foals he had fathered. Unlike other stallions, he had always enjoyed the company of young ones.

The little ones call sounded a bit strange to him though, but he didn't quite know what it was that didnt' sound like the whinnying of other foals he was used to. Upon coming even closer, he realized the little one's size was quite a bit smaller as well, even if it only appeared a few hours old.

He let out a soft whinny in its direction, to see if he could get its attention.

The foal heard an answering whinny behind her and turned, nearly stumbling in her haste. She'd been following her mother and the others for a while now, but why they'd up and abandoned her was still a mystery. But she was getting tired, and catching up with them was getting harder and harder to do. This new horse looked weird to her, but she was getting desperate for someone, anyone to feed and protect her. She teetered over to Mocha, staring at him with big, pathetic eyes.

To Mocha's surprise, the little one actually turned around to toddle to him, and then looked up at him with expecting eyes. Even close up, the little one did not look like any foals he had ever seen. But since it was definitely of equine descendant he decided not to worry about it for now, and just see how he would be able to help it.

He gently touched muzzles with the little one and asked: "What's your name, little one?"

She let out another of the weird whinnies, she didn't know what her name was, all the herd had done was take one look at her and then start moving. The little zhorse was off to a horrible start in life and she could only hope things could get better.

From the little whine the filly gave, he gathered nobody had bothered to give her a name. "How would you like to be known as 'Evona'?", he asked. "It means 'lost', since you are lost in more than one way it seems".

He realized, with all the excitement, it had gotten late. He nudged the filly on to follow him. He knew of a place they could spend the night. He was hoping the herd of elephants had moved this way as well, since they would be added protection for them. They would alert them to any predators or dangers with their loud trumpeting warning calls.

The place he was thinking of was a small tropical oasis, with an amazing variety of luscious fruits, which would be perfect to put some strength into the filly's tired, worn out little limbs.
